James Connoly's Poem: Thanks

James Slides

Thanks

Hello there,
My name is James
And I,
I am from this one place that you probably know of,
It’s like always on the news,
We are run by a Fascist Clown,
Apparently were like 100% free,
And we are a pretty diverse group of people

So,

Yeee Hah Boi It’s the United States of A’merica,
Or
Que pasa bro es Estados Unidos de América
Or
Aye bro i suoi Stati Uniti d'America
Or
almuta'anq, laha yanqat alwilayat almuttahidat al'amrikia

As I said, we are a diverse group of people,
And everybody deserves their voice,
No matter their language or race,
Religion or face,
Could you tell that to Mr. Trump and his utter disgrace.

But,

This country is still so special to me,
As special as an aesthetic can of Arizona Green Tea,
Sitting on a Jewel shelf,
Awaiting me…

But the point of this poem,
Is to share my love,
For this country.

And me,
Well I have an eye for flaws,
And I see flaws in this corrupt country,
But I still love it.

To me,
The United States of America is a gusher ready to
explode.

Explode for the bad,
But be tasteful for the good.

I realized one day,
That without this country,
None of us in this room would be where we are,
Or who we are.

Our countries,
Play such a big role in who you are in life,
And for some people that sucks,
But for us in America,
It’s opportunity.

The world screams,
With joy,
With sorrow,
And mixed emotions.
Because in my mind,
We live in hell,
Except,
Satan has nice parts of hell,
And hell-ish parts of hell,
And I am pretty sure we live in the nice part.

Because this world sucks.

Terrorism,
Disease,
Poverty,
Obesity,
Starvation,
It’s called reality.

But the one thing my country does,
Is shelters us from a big bad world,
As much as they can,
But then that big gusher pops,
And what happens next.

All of the world’s a stage,
But we aren’t on the stage,
We watch,
Cause we’re spoiled.

Ching Ching
We ain’t all rich spoiled,
But in this country,
We’re socially spoiled.

Covered up from that outside world,
That you haven’t seen,
Everything made to look good-ish,
Not to say we don’t have struggles,
But we have the one thing many do not,
Freedom.

So look at yourself,
And ask,
Where would you be without this country,
And,
What would you be.

It’s interesting.

I live here,
I dream here,
I am here,
I love here.

So thanks America.

  2. Your poem was very creative. I enjoyed your presentation. I feel like your poem was very...."you". The poem didn't even have to say your name on it but everyone would know that it was yours. Good job!

  3. James, I love this poem! It's extremely funny (and cheesy) and it's a really unique topic to talk about in a spoken word poem, while still bringing up controversial and important topics about our country and our world. Additionally, I knew that this is going to be a wild ride before we even started, with the box and the Arizona green tea, I knew this is going to be fun! Overall, this is quite something out of this world!

  5. This was so impressive James! I love how you share the good side to America, but you also question the motives. You made it funny, and this is the first funny poem. I loved the props and you presented it with such ease, it kind of just rolled off of your tongue. It's totally unique to you and I really enjoyed listening to it.

  12. Awesome poem James! This poem was funny and meaningful at the same time. I liked how you chose to talk about what you were thankful for because a lot of people in the class wrote about their feelings. It was interesting on how you wrote about a topic that everyone could relate to. I also liked how you made it funny and how you added different languages to your poem. Overall, amazing poem James!

  14. This poem was extremely james like, you chose to write about something you're grateful for while everyone else wrote about their issues (something sad). This poem really made me think about life if my grandparents had no reason to come to the united states which made me really thankful. The humor and props you brought really added more personality to your presentation. I loved this poem, good job.

  16. This poem was really creative and I like how you added a funny aspect to the poem that no one has really explored before. I could tell that you were passionate about your subject and were really exploring your personal identity. Just by reading it I could feel a aspect that no one else in the class has done before, so it was refreshing. Great job!

  17. This was a great poem, James. I like how you added humor in it at the beginning. The tone and mood of your poem changed a lot, but at the right places. I love the overall meaning of your poem. It shows that even though all this stuff is going on in our country, you understand that they are trying to protect us and you still love it. Great Job!

  18. I think you took a different approach than a lot of the people in our class in how you talk about America. You address the ups and downs of the US and how you still enjoy being an American. Also, I really like the part with the different languages to represent how diverse America is.
