Meygan's Poem: September 9, 2006
Age 3
Salty tears running down my face
Hoping that the words escaping from
My mother’s mouth weren’t true
The day had come
The day I would learn that
Only a few words could
Make my perfect world
slowly drift into pieces like the continents
The day I learned the for the next 15 years
I would be the mediator between two opposing sides
The day that my parents divorced
From that day on,
I have always felt like something was
Missing….
It wasn’t the time that I am fortunate to
Spend with the two of them
It wasn’t the love that my parents and I
Have for each other
And it most definitely wasn’t the happy,
Hilarious, and interesting memories shared
But that’s the only thing they’ll ever be
Memories….
It was a piece of my heart and soul
That had been snatched away from me
By conflict that caused my parents to separate
A piece that I will never have back
Time has passed
I’ve grown and matured
And the relationship between my parents
Has gone on a downward spiral
Their conversations are infrequent
And now as dry as the desert
I’m forever stuck in the middle
Forced to pick a side
Wondering what caused such a divide
And if I don’t
I’ve hurt and disappointed them both
But with the time that has passed
I have learned to accept
That this is my reality
So…
I stand in front of you today
Almost 10 years later
Although it seems like it happened yesterday
As the same little girl
With tears running down her face
Wishing that the words that once
Escaped her mother’s mouth
Weren’t true
i felt a connection to that poem because my parents are alos divroced. Also in your poem it is true that you are stuck in the middel because i have the same exerinces.
ReplyDeleteYour poem was really good. I can tell that you have a passion for what you wrote about. I can also say that your poem is very relateable and I'm sure many people in the class can understand what you were going through. and still are going through
ReplyDeletei really liked this poem becuase it talked about things many people had delt with so it was relatible but also very personal to your experiances
ReplyDeleteThis poem is very good and expressed your feelings very well. You showed what you thought about your Parent's divorce and that you wish they were together. It showed one of the first flaws in your life.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem! My parents are divorced, so I could easily identify with your poem. My parents talk with each other a lot, but I could still tell how it felt to you to have them constantly fighting. The photo added enough impact to show your story but didn't distract from your poem. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteMeygan, your poem was amazing! I loved how you expressed the struggle through your life as a young child as you had to deal with the conflict between your parents. Additionally, you expressed that conflict in a calm and smooth way, as you made it seamless with the rest of your poem. I also liked how you used lots of description to add more thoughts and pictures (imagery) into my mind. Overall, your poem is great!
ReplyDeleteMeygan, you poem really helped me to get to know your story. Even though you are one of my best friends i got to know a different side to your identity. My parents are also divorced and i can really connect to how you feel about it. Your performance was really good. Great job.
ReplyDeleteMeygan, I can so empathize with this poem--my own parents separated and divorced at probably around the same time as yours. That shifting of role from child to mediator feels really poignant to me. I like the way you position yourself as still a little girl when you think about it--it reminds me of Sandra Cisenros' narrative "Eleven," where she writes about feeling 3 and 7 and 9, even though it is her eleventh birthday. She is one of my favorite writers, and this evokes a really similar image to me. Great job memorizing your poem, too--that is tough to do!
ReplyDeleteThis was an amazing poem Meygan! The thoughtfulness in this was great, and the rhyme, rhythm, and tone was all so good. I could really relate to the struggle of divorce that you portrayed, and I thought you presented them to the class all so well excellent job Meygan!!!!
ReplyDeleteMan was this a great poem. I really enjoyed how you brought in a very personal subject and turned it into an artistic poem, and I thought that your presentation was overall great. Good job Meygan!
ReplyDeleteYour poem was good and you were also one of the people that took this one way back and it actually meant something to you.
ReplyDeleteWow! This was so awesome. I loved the connection at the ending to the beginning of the poem. It was so well written and it kind of hit me in the face. you helped me see your world because my parents aren't divorced, and couldn't imagine how you feel. It was really interesting because I never thought of a divorce as a battle. SO AMAZING!
ReplyDeletewow that was amazing i love how you talked about this because something that lots of people can relate to awesome job
ReplyDeleteI thought this poem was very insightful into your life and the effects a divorce can have on someone personally I couldn't relate to you poem but i could tell it meant alot to you.
ReplyDeleteMeygan this poem made me want to cry it was so good. You wrote your poem on something that a lot of kids in this class can relate to and you showed it beautifully. I liked how you ended the poem with the same thing you started it with which brought it back to your feeling of hoping your parents hadn't divorced. I can tell this was hard for you to write about and present to the class and I applaud you for being brave enough to share that. You had a vulnerability in your poem which made it an experience for all of us and I could really imagine what you were talking about.
ReplyDeleteMeygan, this poem was amazing! I don't know why you were scared to present this poem. I never thought that you had sad feelings in your mind. You always showed yourself as a happy child and I never knew this was going on in your life. You were really brave to present this poem. I know I couldn't have presented your poem without breaking down. I have experienced this and this almost made me cry. Great rhyming that goes along with the poem naturally. I'm not very close with you, but now after listening to your poem, it makes me want to get to know you better. Awesome poem Meygan!
ReplyDeleteThis poem about divorce is what children do feel about their parents when they get divorced. Many of my friends parents have gotten divorced and I have always felt bad for them they always seem to be missing something and in this poem you seem to show what they are missing.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Divorce is a really hard thing to talk about, it was very brave for you to talk about to the whole class, and it gives a lot of insight about what is going on in your personal life
ReplyDeleteMeygan, your poem was marvelous! I love how you decided to write your poem on your parents and the past. This can relate to a lot of people who's parents either divorced or one of their parents left. It was a very deep and sentimental poem and really moved me. I also like how you went back in time and said you still feel like you're three, like it was yesterday. One more thing, I loved how you said your perfect world drifted into pieces like the continents, that was cool.
ReplyDeleteWow, this was an amazing poem! I think many people in our class, including me, can relate to this. I love how you repeated the phrase you used in the beginning of the poem to give it a full circle feel. Your multi modal component made me feel so connected to the poem and made me see things through your perspective, amazing job!
