Miles Coleman's Poem: Moving On

Moving on

Whitney Taft kenwood and lane
All taking my friends away
I try to not accept the fact that
I'm not smart enough
But I moved on

I felt alone in the first part of 7th grade
I had no one to talk or play with
But then the others came
They were the ones who welcomed me
They were the ones that prevented me from walking around aimlessly
And from my lonely life
I moved on

I was like a balloon with helium I just seemed to float away
My inner personality tells me
Good things instead of bad things
From that day on
I had a reason to go to school
Because I moved on

Now I feel like this is the problem at home
We all dislike each other like the positive side of one magnet and the other
We seem to refuse each other
I have learned to
Move on

I remember

I remember to move on
When things go wrong
And that way I won't feel hated on
For caring about what is going on

When I move on there are people that
Move on with me
We are a flock of birds that group up with
each other

We move on together because
we are the ones
That are caring and want the best for us
and our families and
together we are moving up forward

And on

  7. Miles, your poem was amazing! I loved how you described the challenges you had to face when your close friends had to attend multiple academic centers across a variety of high schools and the way you describe how you handled that situation is amazing (I felt a lot of imagery)! Overall, this is an amazing poem, Miles!

  8. Miles, this poem was amazing! I loved how you explained how you felt alone when your friends left to go to Academic Centers. Even though you didn't go with them, you are really smart, and you shouldn't doubt yourself. I liked how you overcame your problems by making more friends and held back. I love this poem, and I can partially relate to this. Awesome poem Miles!

  9. Glad I could help!

I feel like your poem perfectly illustrated the best-case scenario for someone whose friends have left for some reason. The language helps people realize that this should always be the scenario. Great poem!

  10. Your poem was really good. I can understand what you went through this school year. You let us into both you current life, and your past life as a 7th grader. Overall you did a good job!

  11. Great Job! I think that you explained the process really well, and I can really relate to you because all of my friends went to Whitney, but I didn't get in. I think that this was really well written and easy to read. It seemed like a really optimistic poem, which is totally you. AWESOME!

  12. I love a bunch of things in this poem--the images of a helium balloon floating away, the magnets, and the flock of birds; the use of "moving on" to refer to your friends who left and your own progress forward; and the sharing of a personal tribulation in your life. This poem, to me, shows lots of smarts. I hope that you can push back on this idea that you are not smart as you move on--the "smarts" showcases on standardized tests are only one kind (I'd argue a biased kind).

  13. I liked this poem and how you consistently went back to the point of moving on. I remember how a lot of your closest friends changed schools this year but I didn't know it had bothered you so much. You gave me an insight into a part of your identity I had little knowledge of, even though we have been in the same class since 1st grade. I also liked how you compared it to birds that keep flying and I thought it was well done!

  16. Miles, everyone can connect to this poem. Even though you were afraid to be alone remember that we are all here for you and you are really smart and maybe we'll have a class together at jones. I can especially connect to this because this is my first year at south loop and i really miss my friends but i'm happy that i've made a new family.

  17. Miles, this poem was really relatable and gave the listener a lot of insight on how your friends changing schools impacted your life. I never knew that you felt alone because some of your closest friends went to academic centers. I know I can personally relate to feeling alone during the first half of the year because I was new. Overall, this is a really great poem.

  18. wow this was so good i noticed that you never show that this bothers you and even if your feeling down and someone else is too you cheer them up first no matter what

  19. I love the positive feel this poem has, like no matter how bad a situation is at one point it will get better. I know that a lot of people in our class can relate to their friends going to other schools. This gave us more insight about your personal life, and showed me more of who you really are, great job!
